I'm almost old-school when it comes to photojournalism and really miss black and white. This shot was taken in 2010 after a string of arsons hit Hanover. The arsonist would always light two fires on opposite sides of town. That really stretched firefighters thin, and in every case assistance was rushed from a half dozen nearby departments. Some were 30 miles away, however, and it took time to get there—time that allowed the fires to become uncontrollable. This shot was in the aftermath of an all-night engagement that left firefighters exhausted. The empty jacket and helmet, the bottles of water and the empty cigarette pack tell of their ordeal.
